About Us

What is folklore?

“Folklore” refers to the traditional beliefs, customs, stories, and practices passed down orally from one generation to another within a community or culture. It is an umbrella term used to encompass the following & more: folktales, myths and legends, the supernatural, seasonal traditions and calendar customs, folk arts and crafts, popular belief and superstition, plantlore, folk medicine and witchcraft.

The UCL Folklore Society celebrates folklore from around the world as it is a universal phenomenon that connects us all. Studying folklore provides insights into the history, beliefs, and practices of different cultures and communities from around the globe.

What sort of events does the UCL Folklore Society host?

The UCL Folklore Society hosts a diverse range of social and academic events aimed at exploring various aspects of folklore. Such events may include:

Tapestry is a student-led presentation series wherein UCL students can present on a folklore topic. This lecture series was created in response to students requesting to co-host an event on their favourite folktale, cultural traditions, and cherished folkcrafts. We host one main field trip per term to places of historical or folk interest across the UK. Current planned field trips include Stonehenge, the Hellfire Caves, Highgate Cemetery, Epping Forest, and many more. In the future we hope to host longer and potentially even international field trips!

We are proud to host speakers from a variety of backgrounds. Join us as experts share their insights on folklore topics, weaving together cultural narratives, historical anecdotes, and contemporary reflections.

Join us for introductory workshops for crafts and practices such as tarot reading, textile arts like embroidery and weaving, candle making, cultural cooking, folk music and more. Stay tuned for more folkcraft events on our calendar!

Join us for regular film nights, with screenings of folk-themed films voted for by you! Keep an eye on our Instagram stories, where you can vote for the films you want us to screen!

Explore culture, history, and art as we experience folklore through exhibits and curated experiences across the UK. Folklore can easily be found in history and art, so we visit museums and galleries to appreciate the exhibits through a folklorist frame.

Enjoy the diversity of folk customs and traditions through our festive events that mark various seasonal and cultural milestones. From solstice celebrations to vibrant cross-cultural festivals, these events focus on celebrating the traditional practices of a festival, from food to music, from rituals to games.
